Battlefields Review

Wharncliffe Publishing Ltd.

"Battlefields Review" is a new magazine, to be published bi-monthly, dedicated to the exploration and study of battlefields worldwide. The editor is Kelvin van Hasselt, who is currently a trustee of the Battlefields Trust and a member of the English Heritage Battlefields Panel.  The publishers hope that their new magazine will stimulate interest in the battlefields and provoke new research - particularly family history research, which has led so many to an interest in the Great War.

Issue No. 1 has 72 pages and there is a great deal of information in them. As one would expect there is a news and diary section plus a useful section on how to find Great War sites on the World Wide Web, a Curriculum Links section for schools and an interesting section on Battlefields at risk  from developers - both UK battlefields - Adwalton Moor and Tewkesbury.

The main part of this first issue focusses on the battlefields of Belgium and there are some very good articles contributed by well-known writers, covering Waterloo, the Battle of the Bulge, Ramillies and Ypres. (The next area to be studied in this way will be Northern France.)

As this is a first issue, it's difficult to predict how the series will develop, but the "Literature of Battle" section should interest many readers.  This issue contains an article by Major Michael Hannon on Byron and the field of Waterloo.

Other to-be-regular features include details of battlefield tour providers, book reviews and details of forthcoming books.

Individual copies are somewhat pricey at £6.50 each, but by taking out a subscription, the cost per issue can be reduced to £4.00 for a 1-year subscription or £3.00 for a 2-year subscription.

Further details about the new magazine, the rationale behind it and, in particular, details of what is planned for future issues, can be found at:

There is also the opportunity to subscribe on-line.
